RIPv2 Summary

Due to a few excellent posts and to try to ease some fears (not least my own), i’ve decided to do some research and post my summarized findings on each of the blue-print topics. Today is RIP and i’ll make sure that they are complete before my exam…

RIPv2 uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP), port 520 (reference TCP/IP, Doyle, Vol.1 page 169) and uses Multicast class D address

Routing updates are sent every 30 seconds, if an update isn’t received for 180 seconds or more, It MARKS the routes served by the non-sending router as being unusable (although the routes will still be in the routing table). After 240 seconds, the router removes all routing table entries from that router.
